Gerry McCarthy is a proud Territorian who has worked tirelessly over the past 40 years to advocate equality and a prosperous and fulfilling future for all Territorians.
He is the Local Member for the regional and remote electorate of Barkly and currently Northern Territory Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development and Minister for Public Employment.
He believes that good housing is a right for all Territorians that leads to better education, health and employment outcomes as well as improved living conditions and social status.
Gerry has led by example living in rudimentary bush camps and tents on cattle stations and Aboriginal Land Trusts while founding five government schools in the Barkly Region between 1980 and 1993.
As a Minister in the Northern Territory Labor Government, Gerry is working with communities to build and maintain homes where local people feel they belong, can raise healthy children and share a sense of empowerment through appropriate housing.
Gerry was first elected to the Northern Territory Parliament in 2008 and won consecutive terms in 2012 and 2016.
In Government, his ministerial portfolios from 2009-12 included Lands and Planning, Construction and Infrastructure, Transport, Correctional Services and Arts and Museums.
In Opposition from 2012 -16, Gerry was the Deputy Leader and Shadow Minister for Treasury, Regional Economic Development, Resources, Mines and Energy, Primary Industries and Fisheries.
He is a renowned teacher and was recognised for 'Outstanding Service' after 30 years as a Principal and founding Head Teacher of five remote Aboriginal schools in the NT.
Gerry has lived and worked in the Barkly region over four decades, raising a family with his wife Dawn in some of the remotest parts of Northern Territory.
As an advocate for Tennant Creek and Barkly communities, Gerry has worked hard to achieve better services and outcomes in health, education, training and employment, youth, correctional services and regional development.
Gerry has played a sustained and active role in many community sporting, cultural and arts initiatives throughout the region.
As a proud Territorian Gerry believes the Barkly is the best place in Australia to raise a family, make a contribution to the community and be part of a unique and beautiful part of the world.
