Territory Labor is urging the CLP Government to engage in genuine community consultation before rushing through its controversial Territory Coordinator Bill.

While Labor supports streamlined processes to fast-track quality economic projects, this cannot come at the cost of community wellbeing, environmental safeguards, or the Territory lifestyle.

The draft Bill proposes sweeping changes, allowing the Territory Coordinator and Chief Minister to bypass existing laws. Yet, after allegedly years of work, the CLP government still cannot answer fundamental questions about how it will operate.

Questions raised by community members and stakeholders during poorly promoted, last-minute information sessions include:

  1. What principles or strategies will guide the Territory Coordinator in prioritising projects?
  2. What current projects justify the proposed “step-in” and “exemption” powers?
  3. Why grant an unelected official authority to approve high-risk activities, such as nuclear waste storage, bypassing laws designed to protect Territorians?

These critical questions remain unanswered, raising doubts about the government’s transparency and competence. After more than four years of preparation, why can’t the Chief Minister address these simple, legitimate concerns?

Territorians deserve clarity before such sweeping powers are enacted.

Quotes attributed to Opposition Leader Selena Uibo:

“Lia Finocchiaro promised transparency and integrity but has failed to deliver. First, she tried to hide this Bill from Territorians; now she’s rushing it through without proper scrutiny or community consultation.

“The Chief Minister must respect Territorians by addressing their genuine questions and real concerns. Real leadership isn’t about scoring political points—it’s about putting the Territory first and listening to its people. We urge the Chief Minister to step up and do just that.

“Territory Labor wants to see a comprehensive consultation process with meaningful community engagement before this Bill is introduced into Parliament.”
