PRESS RELEASE: CLP Must Step In to Support Legal Aid

October 03, 2024

CLP must step in to support Legal Aid

The Territory Labor Opposition is concerned about expected cuts to Legal Aid services and has called on the CLP Government to urgently step in.

When in government, Labor provided top up funding to Legal Aid to help address demand pressures and ensure Territorians didn’t go unrepresented in court.

The CLP needs to come to the table and provide extra demand-based funding.

The service cuts are expected to be the largest in the organisation’s history and will impact thousands of Territorians.

Quotes attributed to Deputy Opposition Leader Dheran Young:

“Everyone deserves access to justice.

“It is extremely concerning Legal Aid may be forced to cut services, this is an organisation which ensures all Territorians have fair access to justice.

“The former Labor Government provided top up funding to Legal Aid on multiple occasions when demand was high.

“Lia Finocchiaro must step up.”
