Press Release: CLP Overlook Crime Prevention Measures

CLP Overlook Crime Prevention Measures

In the first week of Parliamentary Sittings, Territory Labor will be urging the Chief Minister to introduce more than just punitive measures to improve community safety.

The CLP’s proposed legislative changes respond to crimes once they have been committed and won’t have any preventative impact.

This will not make the community safer.

The new Government claims they will tackle root causes and implement crime prevention measures, however they are yet to name one root cause or what measures they will put in place to address it.

The new Corrections Minister has previously said ‘jailing is failing’; yet their only plan is to lock more people up and further entrench them in a cycle of crime.

If the CLP is serious about making our community safer, they need to invest in crime prevention measures including youth diversion programs, pathways to long-term employment, housing investment and honouring the previous Labor’s Government’s commitment to fully fund Territory schools in partnership with the Commonwealth Government.

Quotes attributed to Opposition Leader Selena Uibo:

“We respect that Territorians voted for change but the Government’s proposed reforms will not make the community safer.

“This will only create more criminals, not prevent crime or get people on a better path and contributing to society.

“My refreshed Labor team will be fighting for measures that support stronger communities and prevent crime in the first place.”

Quotes attributed to Shadow Attorney General Chansey Paech:

“The CLP’s proposed legislative changes won’t respond to crimes until they’ve been committed and won’t have any preventative impact.

“If the CLP are serious about community safety they must actually address the root causes of crime and not just stick to pre-rehearsed slogans.

“Poverty, education and housing need to be at the top of the agenda.”
