Marion Scrymgour is the Labor Member for the Federal Electorate of Lingiari, which encompasses the whole of the Northern Territory except Darwin, as well as the Indian Ocean Territories of Christmas and Cocos/Keeling Islands. It is the second biggest federal electorate in Australia – 1.3 million square kilometres (or 5 times the size of the United Kingdom).
Marion was elected to the seat in May 2022.
With cultural links to the Tiwi Islands through her mother, and Central Australia through her father, Marion was raised in Darwin with her 11 siblings and extended family.
Marion was a Member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 2001 to 2012 representing the electorate of Arafura. She was the first Indigenous woman to be elected to the Northern Territory Parliament. As the Deputy Chief Minister of the Northern Territory from 2007 until 2009, she was the highest-ranked indigenous woman in government in Australia’s history.
In 2013 Marion was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Health Sciences by the University of Sydney. She was the first Aboriginal woman to be awarded this honour by the Faculty of Health Sciences. Marion also completed studies in corporate governance that same year and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Marion has also worked for several NT Aboriginal organisations such as the Wurli-Wurlinjang Aboriginal Corporation and the Katherine West Health Board Aboriginal Corporation. She has held positions in Commonwealth and Territory Health Departments and with national charity organisation Australian Red Cross. She was CEO of the Tiwi Islands Regional Council.
Immediately prior to her election to the Federal Parliament, Marion was the CEO for the Northern Land Council.
