Joel Bowden

Joel Bowden grew up in Alice Springs and currently lives in Darwin with his wife and four children.
Joel and his children are regulars at the Rapid Creek and Nightcliff markets and spend many an evening at the Marrara Oval participating in community sports. Joel is passionate about sport and believes in the value of organised sport to young people in our community.
This is lived out through his 4 children who play soccer, football, gymnastics, horse riding, cricket, and ice skating – just to name a few! Joel is a passionate supporter of his kids’ sports and is always on the side lines cheering them on.
Joel is passionate and committed to his family and prides himself on his dedication to social justice. Joel believes in a Territory where every member of our community is safe and respected, and valued for the role they play in society.
Joel grew up in Alice Springs, and spent two years living in Ernabella, a small indigenous community in northern South Australia. He left Alice Springs after high school and played AFL for Richmond Football Club.
He was drafted at the end of 1995 under a father-son selection, his father being former Richmond 1969 premiership player Michael Bowden. He debuted for the Tigers in 1996 and carved a reputation as one of the ‘Tigers' favourite sons’ winning the Jack Dyer Medal as Richmond’s Best and Fairest twice in 2004 and 2005 and twice named All Australian in 2005 and 2006.
Joel was elected President of the AFL Player’s Association in 2006 and served as President till his retirement in 2009.
As the Labor candidate for Johnston, Joel brings a breadth of real life, community involvement and professional experience to the role. Alongside his AFL career, Joel holds a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Business Administration and is currently studying a Bachelor of Laws at Charles Darwin University.
Joel is the current General Secretary at Unions NT and has previously worked with the Northern Territory Department of Tourism and Culture, AFLNT, as well as running his own hospitality and property development business in Victoria.
Joel is a family man at heart, and passionate about the opportunity to advocate in Parliament for the people of Johnston.
